🛑 WHAT IF ONLY 25% OF US STOPPED RENTING FOR A JUST COUPLE MONTHS?
Here’s a thought: a lot of us are just a bad month or two away from homelessness anyway. Instead of paying outrageous rent, what if 25% of us did something radical together for everyone —stopped paying rent and temporarily lived with friends or family when evicted?
We only need to target the large-scale property owners, not the little guys.
If just 25% of renters did this together, property managers and landlords would have no choice but to cave.
In fact, within about 3-6 months:
• Rent prices would plummet: Corporate landlords with large portfolios of vacant units would face immense pressure to lower rents dramatically in an attempt to attract tenants back. Many would offer discounted rates or no-deposit options just to avoid further financial strain.
• Property values would drop: With so many units empty and rental income drying up, the value of rental properties would begin to decrease, creating a buyer’s market and making homeownership more affordable. Investors might begin offloading properties at lower prices, increasing the availability of affordable housing.
• Corporate landlords would feel major financial strain: Large property management companies and institutional landlords would see significant losses. Their stockholders and investors would demand action, which might include selling off assets or restructuring their portfolios, all while rent prices continue to fall.
• The housing market would destabilize: The rental market’s instability would start to affect the broader housing market. Corporate landlords unable to fill vacancies might reduce investment in new developments, leading to a halt in construction projects and pushing the industry into a downward spiral.
• Government intervention would be inevitable: Faced with widespread financial and market instability, the government would likely be forced to intervene. This could lead to emergency policies such as rent control, tenant protections, or affordable housing mandates to prevent further collapse and rebalance the market.
Within 3-6 months, the pressure on corporate landlords would force them to make significant changes, and the housing market could begin to shift toward more affordability as a result.
No one can force us to rent. If enough of us stop feeding into this system that exploits us, the market would have to adjust—and maybe then we’d see real change.
They tell us to cut back on coffee and “avocado toast” while they raise rent and their own salaries. They say we should just go camping instead of ever taking a real vacation. OKAY! LET’S DO IT! If you don’t have friends or family to stay with for awhile: LET’S GO “CAMPING” FOR A FEW MONTHS!
They can pass laws against camping, or try to stop extra people from living in houses and apartments, but they can’t enforce them at scale—and they definitely can’t make us go back to the broken system.
Are they going to evict the people allowing friends and family to live with them and lose even more money? Not a chance. Not if we’re in this together.
Staying with friends and family, or tent-living, will be temporary, and will sure beat paying half (or more) of your income just to keep a roof over your head FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.
It’s time WE take back control! What do you say!?
