Matt Damon is making his return as Benjamin Mee in the long awaited follow-up to the 2011 hit film ‘We Bought a Zoo’. Cameron Crowe, who directed the original movie, refused to be associated with the production in any regard whatsoever.
Set in a not-so-distant dystopian future, the United States has engaged in nuclear war with North Korea. With the aftermath leaving crops in California radioactive, withering, or dead – and with no help coming in the foreseeable future – Matt Damon is forced to slowly kill off their beloved zoo animals in order to feed his starving children.
The movie, which is rated R for violence, language, and substance abuse, really reaches its tipping point when Damon’s children begin to ask why their favorite pig ‘Oinkers’ has gone missing as they eat their breakfast of bacon and eggs.
From here Damon goes down a dark path of slaughter that culminates in a heart-wrenching, dramatic scene in which Damon forces his 12-year-old daughter Rosie, played by Maggie Elizabeth Jones, to slit the throat of their 400 lb lion Solomon. While his daughter cries over the lion’s dead body, Damon cries out “it only takes 20 seconds of insane courage!” – the only line in the film that will remind the audience that this is the sequel to ‘We Bought a Zoo‘.
Inevitably, during the course of the 6-hour movie, the family devolves into cannibalism; with one 37-minute scene proving that a production can – in fact – leave nothing to the imagination.
This doesn’t sound like something Damon would be a part of.
